Basic demonstration of the process of the Fusion Method

    Introduction:-

Fusion:  Fusion or melting is the process in which solids get converted into liquids without adding any solvent. It is the process of heating the solids or semisolids until they melt. Preparation of medicated ointment (sulfur ointment) by fusion method

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Beakers
    •  Stirrer
    • Tripod stand
    •  Bunsen burner
    •  Matchbox
    • Simple ointment
    • Sulfur
    • Composition of simple ointment: active (sulfur), hard paraffin, white soft paraffin, wool fat, and cetostearyl alcohol

    PROCEDURE:

First prepare the simple ointment by melting hard paraffin, white soft paraffin, and wool fat in a beaker under a water bath

    2) Then, add cetostearyl alcohol as emulsifying agent into the molten form

    3) Take 9g of simple ointment in a beaker.

    4) Add 1g of sulfur while continuously stirring.

     5) Heat with constant stirring to thoroughly mix/ dispersed.

     6) Finally remove the beaker from heating and allow it to cool down.

    7) During the cooling process keeps continue stirring until solidifies.

    USES:

    As a parasiticidal and fungicidal.

    In dermatitis, eczema, and scabies.

Basic demonstration of the process of the Ignition  method

    Introduction

Ignition or incineration is the process by which an organic substance is strongly heated until the whole of the carbonaceous matter burns and an inorganic residue is left which is known as ash.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Organic Sample,
    • Silica / Platinium Crucible,
    • Weighing Balance,
    • Spatula,
    •  Heat source
    •

    PROCEDURE:

     1) Weigh the empty crucible/ chine dish

    2) Take the given (1 g) organic sample in the crucible and weigh it again to determine the weight of the organic compound

    3) Now heat the sample strongly

    4) Stir it occasionally.

    5) Heat until it is completely burnt.

    6) Now weigh the ash produced due to ignition

    7) Note the observations.

    OBSERVATION AND CALCULATION:-

Weight of empty china dish =

Weight of empty china dish + organic compound =

     Weight of organic compound =

Weight of china dish + residue =

    Wight of Ash =

Basic demonstration of the process of maceration method:-

    Theory:-

Maceration is the process in which a properly comminuted drug is placed or permitted to soak in a solvent for a specific period (3 – 7 days) with frequent agitation until the cellular structure becomes soft and penetrated by the solvent and soluble constituents are dissolved and go out. The mixture is then strained (pass through a sieve), marc is pressed and the collected liquid is clarified. E.g. tea bags

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Weighing Balance,
    •  Beaker,
    • Stirrer,
    •  Given a sample of Crude drugs,
    •  Menstruum

    PROCEDURE:

    1. Weigh the given amount of crude drug on the weighing balance.
    2. Crushed it by using mortar and pestle into smaller particles.
    3. Now place the crushed drug in a closed vessel containing the whole of the menstruum kept for 3 -7 days.
    4. Shake it occasionally.
    5. The liquid is strained and marc is pressed.
    6. Add the expressed liquid to the strained liquid
    7. The combined liquids are clarified by decantation or filtration.

     CONFIRMATION:

Tests to check complete exhaustion of the drug:
Take a few mL of the last extract and evaporate to dryness, if no residue remains this shows that the drug is completely exhausted.
Measure the specific gravity of the last few mL of extract, if it is equal to the specific gravity of the menstruum, it shows the exhaustion of the drug.

    OBSERVATIONS AND CALCULATIONS:
